I can’t quite believe this. There was an email from Pavla this morning
‘Hi Paula,
look what I had waiting for me this morning……… £820 of damage. I know I have insurance but it’s not the point………
Fed up, fed up………
xx’
Her shop window had been smashed – apparently someone thought it might be quite cool to go around busting windows with his fist (and what did his fist look like…?).
The police have arrested him and he’s admitted to doing it. But as Pavla said, ‘that’s not the point’. It’s the hassle; the damage, the organisation, the repairs, the shop being shut, the energy needed to talk to the police, the insurance company, the glass repair business, the carpenter, the decorator and last but not least the excess and the up-front payment while everything is sorted out (and where’s that coming from at a time like this? Falling in bounty from the sky?). This is not something she needs right now.
Pavla, I know everyone’s thoughts will be with you, gunning for you, and hoping our combined energy will make it all a little easier. My blood boils at the senseless, thoughtless, inane behaviour of the chap who did it, and I just hope the Courts help him to realise the cost to his victims like you through some meaningful reparations.

What the hell is wrong with some people. Pissed and punch happy I guess. I’m so sorry for your friend Pavla. My thoughts are definately with her. I hope she manages to get it fixed without too much wasted time/energy (although this is probably unlikely). I look forward to seeing her website. I’m sure there are many people like me (middle aged, frumpy and frustrated with their clothes) who would happily buy over the internet if they could be sure of getting good clothes. Good luck Pavla! This makes my blood boil. What kind of mentality does this/ Your friend’s shop looks great and I shall mention it to my mother and sister who do occasionally shop in Exeter. Very best wishes to Pavla.

Jane took the words right out my mouth…As in “What in the hell is wrong with some people?!” Drunk? Angry? Looney? Bored teen filled with angst?
Iam glad they caught him, and he confessed. I hope the courts actually punish him.. and he has to make restitution.
Much support to Pavla, wish we could help clean up glass, or shop there.
I’ll check out her website when it goes up..
I know She has good friends there helping her out.:)

I was just appreciating the shop in the earlier post, and now I see that it has been damaged. Sickening! I hope that vandal has to do some work to clean up his mess.
Pavla has beautiful clothes. I wish I could visit her shop. When I read about you working there, I was amazed at all you accomplish. I feel like a slacker!

How awful and senseless.. I hope that the court will compel the person who did such vandalism to repay the cost of repair… Her shop looked like just the kind of place that would be a delight to patronise, I mean, it still does, I’d just been appreciating it via the wonder of the internet

This kind of violence is senseless… unfortunately, it’s not uncommon. I suppose there are sociological/psychiatric explanations for why people have the urge to deface beauty and destroy property, but it still makes me wonder what we are doing wrong as a society that people feel such rage/despair/powerlessness that they strike out like this. I do hope your friend Pavla doesn’t feel disheartened by this act of random violence; I am sending encouraging thoughts from half a world away.

Thank you, thank you everyone for all your thoughts and support – I’ve passed it on to Pavla who really appreciates it.
As soon as the website is up and running I’ll let you know!
I’ve been working there this week and I’m pleased to report the glass is mended and the shop looks fab…Pavla has been buying in London so I haven’t caught up with the latest news on the villain, but I’m working on Monday so will let you know.
A big thanks from Pavla too…

I only hope the little toe-rag gets what he deserves. Unfortunately, because he’s confessed he’ll probably get away with a few hours’ community service, if that….& if he’s old enough.
There was a frankly jaw-dropping programme on Radio Four the other week in which they were speaking to a 14-year-old girl who is a complete tearaway – it was astonishing. And she was getting away with all the dreadful things she was doing, too. She did get sent to court at one point & had a community sentence handed to her & just said the the magistrate, “forget it – I’m not doing it.” Incredibly, she then wasn’t subsequently punished at all, despite her constant appalling, destructive & frighteningly violent behaviour; & her grandmother, who is her legal guardian as her mother refuses to have her at home any more, was fined £25. This girl hasn’t been to school in years & spends her nights out clubbing, drinking & fighting – it’s utterly appalling. What on earth is society coming to…..?
So sorry for Pavla, I do hope that for once appropriate justice is meted out on her & the other shopkeepers’ behalf – although it’ll be cold comfort as the damage has already been done.
