In the last month I’ve arranged my posts and pictures so they an be scanned and read on the front page.
Previously I had the the opening paragraph, maybe an image and the click to ‘read the rest of this entry’.
Would you be kind enough to let me know which you preferred, or if you don’t care one way or another. You can click on one of the categories in the left hand column to compare.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Paula. Haven’t bothered you because I guessed you would be busy as well as coping with your sore head. Hope you’re feeling more like your old self again. I loved reading about Jennifer (Bless) and her calving. I did like like the pic of her sitting on her haunches. Very comical although I don’t suppose she thought so. I’m anthropomorphising again! Re the layout, I e like your opening paragraph, then one of your lovely photos and then the click to ‘read the rest of the entry’, not that any of us need any enticement.

Dear Paula
I have only just read about your head - I am so sorry - but have been out of mine. I hope you are feeling better.
As for feedback on the blog - I prefer the layout you now have, (its also ever so slightly better for the search engines in my opinion as more relevant text appears on what is after all (even on a wordpress hosted blog), notionally, the home page.)
I have joined a Jewish band!

Head is better, though Robert believes I’m now even more peculiar!
But I’ve missed your comments Mary.
Yes, dear Jennifer, she took a knock with her labour but is regaining her energy especially as she is having some oats and barley!
Now I’m going in a predicament…you like one, but Lizzy say the other is better for search engines - decisions, decisions!

Thanks for that Lizzy. Have taken suggestions on board.
My head better. Are you back in yours?
A Jewish band? Curiouser and curiouser! How exciting, can’t wait to hear…

Well, the ‘rules’ say, you should always please your human visitors first, and the search engines second. Except where it doesn’t matter. But I suppose it’s always best to please yourself.

Thanks elizabeth - the ‘this’ slightly ahead of the ‘thats’!

This is good - I like to see the whole prospect ahead of me! Others prefer a secret treat around the corner….

Sorry, arrived late. I have to say that I much prefer the whole prospect ahead as well. x

I think the ‘this’ is gaining.
Thank you everyone!

I like the “lead in” paragraph personally - I think it makes the blog easier to scan through.
HOWEVER, if you use Google reader (which I do now) it doesn’t matter if you put a paragraph or the whole thing, as it gives you the whole thing anyway in the reader…
As for the search engines. I’m actually a search engine fanatic on the quiet (strange thing to be, I know) and I can’t see them being bothered with either way. Google looks for pages, not home pages, so it won’t matter.
One thing I did notice the other day when I was trying to find an old post on your site, there is no way of finding them easily (on mine you can look at “archives” and “top posts”) could these be added? I love looking at old posts now and again. Jane

Thanks Jane - lots of stuff here I’m interested in.
Do I use Google reader, I wonder? Not sure there Jane. And do I find the archive and top post thing on my manage page? I feel a need for a lesson coming on here…
Jane do you host/own your site - or is it like mine?
Anything else you feel I should or shouldn’t be doing will be gratefully received!

I tend to have Google as my homepage on my browser. If you do, you can have something called Google reader to keep up to date on all the blogs that you like reading. It shows you when someone has posted something new and lets you read it using Google Reader instead of actually going to the blog. Really useful if you are like me and have about 20 or so blogs that you like to read occasionally. See http://www.google.com/reader/view/#overview-page
I use the same free WordPress software as you. I have other sites that I own myself, but my blog is purely WordPress.
To find the archives and top post facilities you go to your WordPress dashboard, then go to the Presentation tab, then second tab in called “widgets”. You can then drag stuff from “available widgets” into “sidebar 1″ (as you have only one sidebar, I’m presuming you won’t be able to use sidebar 2). I usually drag a load of them into the sidebar and then see what I get, then if I don’t like them I drag them out again, but “archives” and “top posts” should be quite easy to see.
God, hope that makes sense? Let me know if it doesn’t. Jane

Thank you jane. I now see why I couldn’t do these things - I wasn’t an administrator on my site so didn’t have presentation on my dashboard! It’s all rectified now. Do you think it’s better?
Very good of you to take the time to give me a lesson. Much appreciated.
