Wow, what a fascinating skill; I'd never seen or heard of hedge-laying before. There I thought all those lovely English hedges were just, well, plants. Next time I'm in England (if there's a next time), I'll definitely go on a hedge tour!

Hey Jane - There were some pretty impressive hedges there - and all so different. The Midlands style, which is the last picture, is certainly very eye-catching - though interestingly, they were saying that one of the best hedges for continued stock proofing over the years is the good old rustic Devon style, not nearly so striking visually.

Wowee - that final photo is amazing - has Warwickshire reminiscences for me, though I am probably wrong - it's those twiddly bits at the top they do so nicely in my old part of the world. Who needs a fence when you have craftsmanship like that?

I've always loved the look of a laid (layed?) hedge... that last picture is gorgeous! So many more hedges are being laid in Dorset. It's good to see the old skills coming back, and farmers wanting them back. It encourages so much more wildlife, and I'm told is a great way of keeping stock in (instead of ugly wire fences). Sorry to hear your "romantic" night away was.... wet and melded.... as you say, better to stick with the moths in the future!
